About The SGO

The mission of the Brooklyn Technical High School Student Government Organization focuses on two responsibilities: Representation on behalf of the student body and organizing events in and outside of the school. The SGO serves as a link between the administration, faculty, alumni association, the Parent Teacher Association of BTHS and the Student Body. The SGO has representatives that attend monthly School Leadership Team (SLT) meetings, monthly School Safety Meetings, along with individual meetings. We share information about current events with the student body through monthly newsletters distributed to prefects, websites, class council, fliers, word of mouth, announcements and other means of communication. Students may also vote on issues that may be important to them by voting and commenting online on our ¡°Voice¡± page.???

The SGO organizes numerous school events every year. Besides the usual class events (Sophomore/Junior Winter trips, Senior winter and Spring trips, Junior-Semi Formal, Prom etc..) we also hold the numerous other school wide functions.

Our main goal is to try to create a lively and positive environment within the school. The current and future students of Brooklyn Tech are our number one priority.

Affiliations

The SGO has affiliations within the school as well as outside the school.

School Leadership Team (SLT) - The School Leadership Team consists of the Principal, the AP of Organization, teachers from the UFT, parents from the PTA, alumni from the Alumni Association, and two student representatives from the SGO. SLT meetings focus on school concerns and matters. Topics can range anywhere from new classrooms to the school budget.

School Safety Committee - The School Safety Committee consists of the AP of Facilities, teachers and a student representative from the SGO. The School Safety Committee mostly focuses on facilities within the school.

Borough Student Advisory Council (BSAC) - The Borough Student Advisory Council consists of student and teacher representatives from all over the borough of Brooklyn, and a Department of Education representative. BSAC discusses changes to school systems on a statewide level.

MTV - Brooklyn Technical High School has had an ongoing relationship with MTV. Many students may remember the appearances of Jeannie Ortega, Papoose and Rihanna in our school building. MTV has also conducted a talent search within the school for students to appear on their new reality show “Brooklyn”.

Madison Square Garden - The SGO has held our annual basketball game at Madison Square Garden where students get to play on the floor of the actual Madison Square Garden basketball court.

The Branches of the SGO

The Student Government Organization is broken into several sections.

The Executive Board

The Executive Board consists of the Head COSA , the SGO Speaker and all the individual class executive members: President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary, and Parliamentarian. Every member also has another duty and title.

The Executive Board also hosts many school wide annual events such as the spirit games, the Madison Square Garden basketball game, the Winter Wonderland Dance, the Valentine¡¯s day dance and more. The Executive Board is also responsible for granting club charters to new clubs and the annual school budget for students. The Executive Board makes the final decisions on all Student Government related concerns. However, no final decision is made without the crucial input of the Student Assembly.

Student Assembly

The Student Assembly consists of students from every class. A prefect representative is voted in by each of their respective prefects. Since there are 36 prefects in each class, there should be around 144 prefect representatives in the Student Assembly.

Every member of the Student Assembly is responsible for voicing concerns from their classmates in their prefects. Members must also attend a biweekly meeting to discuss and vote on important school issues.

Student Union

Every member of the Student Union is mandated to serve as advisory for students with questions/concerns once a week during their lunch period in the Head COSA’s office in 7C1.

For an application to be a member of the Student Union, please contact Mr. Williams at mrwilliams90@aol.com. The application is in his room in 7C1 at the beginning of the year.

Class Council

There are four class councils in the school - one for each class. Each individual class council is responsible for raising money for their class. Each individual class may do any fundraising event as long as they do not break the rules. The Class Council is also responsible for SGO cards and volunteer hours. Class Council also holds Leadership classes. Leadership classes are open to everyone. This class teachers important leadership skills. Leadership classes occur once a week after school.

Should you have any questions pertaining to your class or joining your class council, please contact your class president. For seniors, please contact your class COSA - Mrs. Manduley in 7C1 during your lunch period.

Club Team Council

Every club and team in Tech needs to send a representative to attend every club team council meeting. Club Team Council meetings give important inforamtion about the budget and changes that may affect the clubs and teams in the building. Failure to send a representative to Club team Council meetings may face having their charters revoked.
